I thought I'd start a build thread on here for my slabby 750 race bike now that I have most of the parts I need for the build. It will be a budget racer so don't expect loads of bling parts or magical engineering I've not got a workshop and I'll be using basic tools (with a little help from my brother who runs a car repair business) I'll be running it with the Earlystocks club next year in Monoshock 3 class, basically any pre 1987 monoshock bike is eligable but full regs can be found here - www.earlystocks.co.ukMonoshock 3 class allows the use of 17 inch wheels so I'll be using the wheels, forks and yokes from a Bandit 600 I already have. I would have prefered to use a Yamaha R6 5eb front end but I don't have the funds available at the moment. Just like to say thanks to all who have offered advice so far - it's appreciated Here's my starting point - a 1986 GSXR 750 G frame and swingarm.

Apologies for the blurry pics - I'll redo them tomorrow in daylight and see if they improve. Anyway next up it is time to fit the bandit front end. I was sort of hoping that it would drop straight in....but no.........nothing is ever that simple is it The steering stem is too long for a straight fit so it was a trip to my brothers unit to borrow some tools Getting the steering stem out of the GSXR bottom yoke was a doddle, just drilled out a small retaining pin and pressed it out. Getting the Bandit stem out proved much harder though as the bugger is welded in. After grinding back the weld and trying it on the press it popped out on the 3rd attemp. So GSXR stem was pressed back into the Bandit yoke and then my brother welded it into place. Fitted new head bearings and the front end was dropped into place.

Now to start with the rear end. I originally thought that a K8 750 shock would fit but I got my measurements mixed up between slabby/slingshot frames and soon realised it wasn't gonna happen as the K8 shock is 315mm long compared to the standard GSXR shock being 290mm Bearing in mind that this is supposed to be a "budget" racebike I can't spend loads of money on trick aftermarket parts so have to make do do with what I already have or can afford. So.........having a look around in the shed I decided to try the Ohlins shock from last years racebike - a VFR 750 F (1986) and although it's 15mm shorter than a standard GSXR shock it fitted straight in with just a few washers to take up the slack on the lower mount. It has dropped the rear end a bit but I have set the shock to it's softest setting to see if there are any clearance/suspension travel issues and all seems ok. The seat unit subframe now sits a lot closer to the rear wheel but I will be chopping that off anyway to fit a different seat unit. I'm a bit worried that I might run into ground clearance issues once the engine/exhaust are fitted though? Any advice from more experienced bike builders would be welcome I've got the back wheel and all other bits fitted but the GSXR swingarm looks to be around 5mm narrower so I have got it fitted with a smaller spacer on the right hand side but now the rear brake caliper won't line up with the disc so I have used a brake mount from an SV650 which is narrower but lines up just fine with some washers to space it out. Anyway......heres a pic of progress so far

Hi, Keep the pics coming, an early R6 shock fits with not too much trouble, just make sure the reservoir is horizontal type.

Cheers Downtheshed, I've done a bit of research on the R6 shock and it looks like the way forward so I've bought a 2002 one off Ebay for a very reasonable £40. Hopefully it should be here by the weekend so I can get it fitted then. I was looking at fitting a 2007 R6 seat unit but it's a lot of time/trouble I can do without as I need the bike built by February ready for Dyno runs/set up and testing before the first race in March. I had a look online and found a Ducati 687 (mini 916) seat unit from Unatec.
It's pretty much a straight forward fit to the original subframe with only minor mods. I'm also going to rebuild the forks with K Tech fork springs and new seals and then once I have a good rolling chassis I can finally get round to the good bit and get the motor in.

The R6 shock arrived yesterday so got cracking fitting it. I only realised a couple of days ago that Mightlife had put up a post in the info section on doing this mod so cheers for that, it was very helpful Unfortunately I didn't have a GSXR shock to take the bottom bearing from so I ground down the inner R6 race to match the newly ground down bottom eye. Trouble is, the R6 shock uses an M12 bolt and the GSXR uses an M10 bolt. At first I was going to drill the holes wider on the shock linkage but thought this might weaken it too much so I cut a piece of 1mm steel plate to size and rolled it round the bolt to form a sleeve and then pressed it into the inner race. It worked a treat and provided a nice snug fit. I had to use a scissor jack to compress the shock slightly so I could get the top bolt into place. At least now I can get the motor mounted and start working on getting an exhaust fitted

Got the engine, seat unit and renthal bars fitted so starting to come together nicely now. Ignore the bloody awful paint on the tank as that and the seat unit are going to be painted black. Next up is to get a battery box made up and start on the wiring (I hate wiring) I've got a Bandit 600 wiring loom and CDI but I'm not sure if the rev limiter is high enough on the B6 CDI?

The seat looks to low m8 when I had a yoshi seat on my slab by it had some brackets to raise it up to the right height

Looks like great build so far shock wise, I ran r1 shock on my slabbie but r6 is good too, yup will need to swap the spring at some point, just to be aware, that if you put the preload adjuster to max you won't get 5mm static sag (min) you need for race bike !!! Been there done that it's greAt shock but in slabbie soft spring due to geometry , etc? the seat unit I recon std slabbie would look better , if I can find any panels you can have them free, as for Forks well bandit will be fine if you fit liner rate springs and revalved kit, defo, try ma ton or ken somerton at k,tech . Love that your doing this to a slabbie keep it up and don't be afraid yo ask for help. I've got few spares if you need em. As have others.

Cool build.
The seat unit just doesn't fit nicely on the bike without frame cutting/welding, better get some original.
