Hi Gang Last year I had some fun riding around oulton park on my KTM Duke but I realised it wasn't the ideal bike for the job, It was great in the corners and the acceleration was sufficient but the top speed on the straight around 100mph was not quite quick enough and also the front of the bike got very light and wandery. I decided that I needed a small light lower powered bike to learn how to ride properly so the search was on... After a false start involving a zx6r being too expensive I found an old (badly) streetfightered gsxr750 that was local to me. The bike started and the owner had claimed to have ridden it up his street and after a quick viewing to check it out I decided to buy it. so for £600 delivered to my house I got this... As bad as the headlight was I looked a little deeper and saw a bike that had been looked after until it had met its Streetfightery death and then had been abandoned in a garage for five years. I wasn't that bothered by the lack of fairings as I intend to track it without so there is less to worry about if/when I drop it (there will be plenty of crash bungs) I had a dig around in my parts bin and pulled out some bits to freshen it up with some of which I will use and some I won't. And then the strip down started. The exhaust header were blowing and unfortunately the header bolts were made of cheese and five of them snapped of and even resisted having nuts tigged on as the bolt just snapped off a little further down! I then had a look under the wobbly rgv seat unit and fount that it was held on with a couple of m4 bolts and some hope! With that removed I was able to see the rest of the bike Carbs off for a good cleaning And then outside to jetwash the oily crap of the bottom of the engine John

Yes the 17 inch rear wheel was already on the back and it even came with the original 18inch So I wrestled the engine out and bought a haynes to learn how to strip the engine And while I was doing some reading up I modified the USD's to fit And serviced the forks with a homemade spring compressor John

The forks were then slipped into place and I got rear wheel off, I had a spare front 17 inch so I dropped them off to a local dodgy car repair shop to get them painted. I gave the painter vague directions that they needed to be a "sort of greyish metallic colour" and I got these back. I put the tyres on myself with just brute force, a couple of cable ties and some fairy liquid! The head came off the engine and apart from the broken bolts all seems to be well with the engine. John

And its back on its wheels again I needed to sort out the front wheel spacers as i didn't have any, I grabbed some scrap ally from work and set to it on my toy lathe The forks weren't designed for a speedo drive but I got one that would fit the axle and tried to slim it down to fit but it was not to be as I broke through to the gear before it was thin enough John

So I made up some spacers... And when I realised that I had made the wrong size, I made them again. Its all good lathe practice as I only got it in november so its a steep learning curve with everything I make. And checking for axle clearance Spacers mk II John

I also got some heavy duty scales to see what the bike weighs I do think that I need to check the calibration of the scales though. With my fail at a speedo drive fitting I had to rethink my options as I wouldn't be refitting the std dash. I decided that as I am trying to keep this bike as light as possible I should get a small speedo and then this arrived. I had the std clipons for the forks so I chucked them on to see how they felt and pushed the bike outside in the sunshine for a better look. John

And with that we are nearly up to date with the bike. I have been on a spending spree to get all the bits to finish the bike and so far I have got - KOSO dash Li -Po battery Titanium k3 headers Akrapovic link pipe and can Brembo master cylinder and ally levers spare top clamp and risers (I want to try the different riding positions) flat bars renthal type bars stick coils I have started on the refitting of the subframe and have been buying some bits of metal to make a better safer interface. I had also sent the cylinder head off to a local spark eroder to get the snapped off bolts out and that was ready this week. Now I just need to find some time to start putting it all back together! Cheers John

Fair play & looks a good base to work off.

Hope! yer that engineering back stop, along with f..k it that will do.

You need to bottle that sunshine.

The drive really pisses me off, it's really scabby! House repairs in order of priority
Roof needs mostly replacing New kitchen New porch new drive and front wall
I did manage to get the garage rebuild to the top of the list just behind the double glazing!

Looking good m8 keep up the pics ps you better hide the other bikes the anti anything not suzuki squad will be along soon I'm too obsessed with motorbikes to just keep my obsession to one brand! There are far too many great bikes out there to just ride one type, I have randomly had more kawasaki's than other bikes (usually because of money) but I'm trying to balance that out now! I will try to keep pictures of the other bikes to a minimum as I don't want to upset the regulars I am am really looking forward to getting the gsxr roadworthy and seeing how it rides, the more I work on it the more I am enjoying its shape and form! This is should be a quick project as I want to have it running in spring for some shakedown rides before I do the track days. John
