Hopefully repair rusty, always a last resort for me to buy spares....I like to restore if at all possible, I will be splitting the carbs tonight, so I will know what the situation is. I have paraffin washed the carbs on their brackets (as they come off the bike) I have treated the external screws to 'plus-gas' and its soaking in now...off to work sadly, so I will have to wait until this evening to see whats what.

Just a good thing to know if you struggle with any bolt wondering how to get out I always spark erode it works like opposite of welding it erodes the stud without damaging any thread I used it once to get a crank pulley bolt out of a 4x4 that had snapped flush carbide drills wouldn't touch it didn't even have to get engine out cost 60 quid well worth it

Spark eroding is like I said it's the opposite of welding it erodes the stud away I couldn't believe how good it is it basically blasts the stud away without damaging threads it saved me buying a crank and taking engine out then rebuilding engine he got stud out with engine in, have a look on the net saves drilling expensive mistakes

The original carbs are shot...the needle valves simply wont come out. so I have to make a good set of carbs out of what I have knocking around...the donor carbs will have to work now.

No idea Meg, as the donor carbs look to be in better condition, with all adjusting screws moving as they should, im just going to service the carbs and install. plus money is very tight. the donor carbs only cost £40.

I guess not, as the 400 engine is wider than my little compact 250cc

Nice find.. I guess you got it really cheap considering the state it was in..? Fingers crossed you won't have to spend too much on getting it in working shape.. Looking forward seeing the project progress

Well, a quick update....It's back together, I have had to restore pretty much everything, except the wiring loom....which is not brilliant, I have had to remake some ends off already, The bike runs ok now, it took a bit of time to get it to start, as it hadn't ran for over 16 years.
cant remember how to put photos on here.....
I do have a couple of electrical issues though..
1. when the bike is running and I turn on any electrics...lights etc...the engine almost dies unless I rev it.
2. the fan is not cutting in when its hot, the fan works as ive bypassed the sensor. the dash gauge doesn't seen to move either.
any ideas?
