Can anyone recommend one then? A good CHEAP one. What sort of sound does a dodgy valve make btw?? If it says just the top then i'll at least give the piston crowns a polish

If it blows somewhere by the crankcases = pistons, bore, rings. If it blows somewhere by the head = valves, seats, gasket. It sounds like fssss

Hahhaha...........when it runs you can only hear a faulty gasket that will do You can also break a spark plug bore it empty (is not easy) and weld a piece of pipe to it and connect it to your compressor

That kit will work well enough - just make sure it has the 12mm plug adapter as it may only come with 10 and 14mm as std!

Yep 12 & 14mm, just got it a bit cheaper. At this rate i'll have a full on workshop soon lol.

hmmm?? got the tester today & did the test. No audible air leaks anywhere?? The leakage gauge read (left to right as sat on the bike) 20%-25%-18%-25% so all in the green. Just to be sure I moved the piston away from TDC till I could hear a hiss & it wasn't till it got in the yellow. So where do I go from here? I was going to do a compression test again but as I've drained the oil.

On the gauge said low till the 40%.I think it is to low, as you said began leaking in the yellow Buy some cheap oil and do a compression test. Did her used oil?

only leaked when I moved the piston from TDC & that was through the airbox, but that was just to see what it would sound like. No it didn't burn oil at all. I shall refill with the fresh oil & oil filter do another compression test, then change the plugs if compression is good. I was expecting to hear a leak given the low compression? & it being a bitch to start etc.

Given the low compression numbers and averaging 22% leak down, I think you have ring problems! On the race bike we knew we had a head gasket going away or a had a burnt valve if we saw much more than 10% LD!

So as there is still no obvious cause it needs a strip down regardless to find the reason. I was hoping the test would give me a definitive answer

When you de-assembly her you will find some reasons, for sure
